Georgian c. 1750-1800
The Georgian period is rightly considered to be the golden age of English furniture design. The growing affluence of British patrons coupled with the importation of exotic timbers from the expanding British Empire enabled Georgian craftsmen such as Thomas Chippendale and the firm of Gillows to flourish and create a truly British style of furniture. The Georgian period is dominated by three pattern books that shaped English taste: Chippendale's Director, Hepplewhite's Upholsterer's Guide and Sheraton's Drawing Book.
