Carolean Period c. 1670-1690
The return of Charles II’s court from exile on the Continent brought with it the baroque influence of French and Dutch cabinet-makers. The majority of surviving pieces are in oak and exhibit a transition from nailed to jointed construction. A popular design motif during this period was the barley twist shape for chair or table legs, and this has become characteristic of Carolean furniture.
