Captain William George 'Bay' Middleton was one of the most famous horsemen of the late 19th Century. He won numerous steeplechases including the Irish Grand National at Punchestown. He was killed competing in the Midland Sportsman's Cup and was buried in full riding costume at Haselbech, Northamptonshire.
