Charles I Oak Coffer With Carving & Inlay
A rare Charles I carved oak and inlaid coffer of boarded and panelled construction; the coffer's two plank top opening with its original strapwork hinges to reveal a candle box and an interior lined with newspaper dated to 1838; the coffer's panelled front decorated with geometric inlay and applied turned mouldings on the stiles; the ends boldly carved with arches decorated with guilloche mouldings and with a diamond set within the arch; the coffer is raised on the original stile feet.
This oak coffer has survived in remarkably untouched condition and the combination of an inlaid front and carved ends is quite unusual.
