A Powerful Regency Period Carved Mahogany Console Table
The well figured bowfronted top with a crisply carved gadrooned edge centred by a an acanthus leaf, having a mirrored back and raised on powerful leopard monopodiae which stand on a plinth base.. Constructed throughout in the finest Cuban mahogany.
The design of this imposing console table has clearly been inspired by the work of Thomas Hope. Hope drew inspiration directly from original antique remains and the tables illustrated in Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (1807) frequently have monopodiae supports. This motif coupled with the table’s crisply executed gadrooning and the use of beautifully figured Cuban mahogany show the console to be a high quality example of Regency cabinet-making.
