George III Cumberland Dining Table

A George III period Cumberland action mahogany dining table; the beautifully figured top with two leaves above boldly turned stems which are raised on elegant reeded four-splay bases which terminate in the original cap castors. Unusually this dining table retains an excellent faded colour and patination.

The first Cumberland action dining table was reputedly commissioned by Henry Frederick, Duke of Cumberland, the brother of George III. The Duke of Cumberland was a patron of Linnell, one of the finest late Eighteenth Century London cabinet-makers. The Cumberland action is a sophisticated development of the gate-leg table with the legs swinging out to support the leaves without obstructing the legs of the diners.
