A Fine Pair Of Regency Period Carved Mahogany Bergere Armchairs
The upholstered back and seat with scrolling arms which are crisply carved with lotus leaves and raised on channel moulded sabre legs which terminate in cap castors.
These armchairs unusually bear the signature of their maker, H. Paul on the inside edge of the seat rail. Unfortunately there is no apparent documentary evidence regarding H. Paul but on the basis of these armchairs he must have been working for one of the leading cabinet-making firms. The chairs are constructed from the finest quality Cuban mahogany with beautiful figuring in the arms and crispness of the lotus leaf carving suggests that Paul was a highly accomplished carver.
