Georgian mahogany kettle stand

A rare George III Chippendale period mahogany kettle stand; the beautifully figured square top with a wavy gallery and raised on a turned stem which terminates in cabriole legs with pad feet. 

This Georgian kettle stand retains its original wavy gallery which is beaufitully made in laminated sections of ebony, boxwood and mahogany. The stem and legs are made from very fine, dense Cuban mahogany which retains a wonderul colour and patination.

The kettle stand is rare for an antique tripod table in being the perfect height to put a drink beside an armchair.

During the Georgian period the afternoon ritual of 'taking tea' became increasingly fashionable. The kettle stand was placed next to the host and allowed a kettle of hot water to be immediately accessible without crowding the main tea table.
