Georgian yew wood oval tray with shell inlay
An exceptional George III Sheraton period burr yew oval tray; inlaid to the centre with a large and bold shell in boxwood and with elegantly flowing arabesques above and below the shell; crossbanded in mahogany and with an oak gallery.
This is a beautiful example of Georgian marquetry: the shell is unusually large and is boldly rendered and retains much of the original shading that the cabinet-maker applied.
