Crisply Carved Regency Period Mahogany Sofa
The cresting rail carved with acanthus leaves to the ends and centred by an anthemion above an upholstered back and seat; the arms composed of anthemions, acanthus and lotus leaves; raised on lyre shaped legs.
The carved ornament on this sofa is clearly inspired by George Smith's A Collection of Designs for Household furniture and Interior Decoration (1808) where he advises cabinet-makers to 'compare, select and to arrange' motifs from antiquity.
