Portrait of Queen Anne Reverse Glass Print
A rare royal portrait of Queen Anne reverse glass print while a princess: Her Royal Highness Princess Ann of Denmark, after Godfrey Kneller and engraved by John Smith.
This beautiful reverse glass print portrays Queen Anne in her court robes before her accession to the throne of Britain. It is after the painting by Godfrey Kneller (1642-1723) who was court painter from the reign of Charles II to George I. Kneller concentrated almost exclusively on portraiture and his work is a Who's Who of the royal court. As well as his royal portraits his most famous work are the portraits of the Kit Kat Club.
John Smith (1652-1743) was a pioneer of the mezzotint process. Born in Northampton he came to London as an apprentice to Jan Van der Vaart. In 1688 he became chief engraver to Kneller, engraving over a 100 of his portraits.
Presented in a Nineteenth Century Hogarth frame.
