Seventeenth Century Carved Lion Newel Post Finial
An exceptional early Seventeenth Century carved walnut newel post finial; the lion beautifully carved in the sejeant erect pose with a flowing mane and powerful paws grasping a heraldic shield. The heraldry on the shield is late Nineteenth Century. Retaining a great colour and patination.
Similar heraldic lions form a magnificent display decorating the Grand Staircase at Hatfield House and the staircase at Knole is decorated with heraldic leopards of a similar date.
