The Parry Collection at Christie's
At the end of March Christie's sold the second collection of early English furniture accumulated by John Parry. Unlike Parry's previous sale in 1997 the results were far more varied and this largely reflects prevailing market conditions. 1997 was close to the peak in the market and since then the market has become more fragmented and possibly more discerning.
In the sale the rarer and more unusual pieces fetched a premium with a rare Thames Valley region Windsor armchair selling above estimate for £26,000 (plus premium). Bidders paid closer attention than in the past to the condition of pieces- a William and Mary dressing table with replaced foot and side stretchers failed to sell.
We are pleased to note that the only piece purchased from Reindeer Antiques in the sale, a George I walnut card table sold above estimate for £32,450 (inclusive of premium).
A Queen Anne walnut veneered card table available for sale at Reindeer Antiques.
This sale proved the point that when putting together a collection of antique furniture particular attention should be paid to colour, patination and originality.
