An Afternoon of Georgian History and Hospitality

The art and antiques specialists behind the Eat, Drink & Be Merry exhibition will host a special lecture and afternoon tea on Thursday 4 December at Reindeer Antiques, 81 Kensington Church Street, London W8 4BG. Historians Lucy Inglis and Dr Annie Gray will introduce the Georgian era discussing the social niceties and hospitality fashions of the age. Delicacies typical of Georgian England will be served concluding with a sumptuous afternoon tea and an opportunity to view the exhibition and purchase signed copies of Lucy Inglis’ book Georgian London: Into the Streets.
Lucy Inglis is an award-winning author, speaker and social historian with particular expertise in the Georgian age. She will discuss the popular topics of love, sex, intellect, art, ambition and ruin that permeated this fascinating period of history.
Joining her will be food historian, Dr Annie Gray, who has worked alongside celebrity chefs including Heston Blumenthal, James Martin and the Hairy Bikers. She most recently featured on the Great British Bake Off is a panellist on BBC Radio Four, The Kitchen Cabinet. Annie will bring Georgian food to life, explaining how and what would be served whilst highlighting pieces from the exhibition.

About the exhibition
Eat, Drink & Be Merry is a collaborative selling exhibition between three of London’s leading antiques dealers. Taking place from 25 November until 19 December, highlights include an unusual pair of rosewood and amboyna card tables with baize playing surface and original lion paw casters along with an exquisite pair of George II Rococo flying scroll dolphin handle sauce boats made by Thomas Gilpin, an accomplished exponent of the rococo style whose work can be seen in the Spencer family’s collection at Althorp, Northamptonshire.
Among the caricature prints to be shown in the exhibition are works by Rowlandson, Cruikshank and Hogarth. These works paint a colourful picture of the period but also highlight some of the more serious political and social issues of the time.
About the dealers
Reindeer Antiques was established over 35 years ago and is one of London’s leading Georgian furniture specialists with works by the great cabinet makers – Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton.
