Many of you will have heard news of, if not have gone to, the 2012 Masterpiece Art and Antiques fair, held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea a couple of weeks ago. Now in its third year, this week-long fair has already proven itself a mainstay of London's summer cultural highlights, and a huge move forward for the exposure and publicity of high quality antiques for a new clientele and a new generation in the capital. That said, it still attracts the longstanding greats of the interior design, architecture, and art and antique dealing worlds, and so it should. Antique furniture can sit just as comfortably in a modernist, concrete loft apartment, as it does in period homes, stately houses, or country cottages. A well-placed piece of antique furniture within a contemporary setting speaks across centuries of design, its colour, beauty, and craftsmanship holding their own amongst the hard colours and sleek lines of the 21st-century interior. At Masterpiece, jewellery, fine art, automobilia, fine antique furniture and medieval textiles sit side by side with greater aplomb than any other fair in the capital. What's more, it demonstrates the wealth of knowledge and expertise to be found in the world of art and antique dealing, a service that is more important in today's 'wikipedia culture' than ever. The delights of our business's disparate specialisms, and the rich combination of old and new, are what the Masterpiece fair most successfully negotiates.
