Every year it seems to become harder to find unusual gifts for Christmas. If you are in need of inspiration here are a few suggestions:

If you are looking for something quirky I would recommend this Georgian telescope. It is beautifully designed and comes complete with its original carrying case and an alternative eye piece.

A more practical gift would be this superb coal box. It offers plenty of storage of storage for coal, logs or even bottles of spirits. The beautifully crisp carving and high quality oak veneers suggests it was made by Lamb of Manchester.

If you are seeking a more decorative present I would recommend this magnificent Medici Lion. He is the perfect scale for the centre of a mantle piece and would grace any piece of furniture. If you love lions but would like something smaller I have an earlier and smaller scale example on my website.

If you want to give a piece of classic Georgian design how about this handome domed box? Dating to the Sheraton period it is veneered in flame mahogany and is ideal for storing watches, cuff links or jewellery. If you need something a little more masculine I have a good George II tea caddy on my website.

After the success of last year I am exhibiting a large selection of contemporary prints in the gallery ranging from London phone boxes to Comic Art featuring Asterix, Popeye and the Dennis the Menace. We also have the full catalogue of Tottering-by-Gently cartoons for you to browse through.

I wish you all a very happy Christmas and I look forward to welcoming you to the gallery soon.

Bronze Medici lion sculpture

Bronze Medici lion sculpture

1860

Height: 10.25" (26cm)

Depth: 8.5" (22cm)

Width: 15.75" (40cm)

A 19th Century bronze sculpture of the Medici lion; the bronze lion raised on a marble plinth base decorated with bronze rosettes to the front edge.

The Medici lion is based on an original statue which dates to the Second Century, A. and after restoration by Flaminio Vacca was displayed with a copy at the Villa Medici, Rome. After 1798 the lions were displayed at the Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence and copies became popular souvenirs for travellers on the Grand Tour.

This particular sculptur of the lion is unusual due to its large scale and the bronze rosettes decorating the front edge of the plinth are a rare feature.
