This month I have chosen to explore the vibrant colours and strong contrasts of the Eighteenth and early 19th Century interior.

The expansion of new trade routes through the Empire gave Britain's cabinet-makers access to a new range of exotic woods including satinwood from the West Indies and rosewood from the Indian Subcontinent. These timbers commanded a substantial premium and items veneered in rosewood would have cost twice that of a comparable piece veneered in mahogany.
