A rare George III Chippendale period carved mahogany cabinet; the cleated top above a pair of cupboard doors which are veneered with panels of Cuban curl mahogany framed within a vigorously carved border of C scrolls incorporating acanthus leaves, rosettes and blind fretwork which open to reveal pull-out trays made from cedar; below are two short and one long graduated drawers lined in oak and cedar and retaining their original swan neck handles; raised on bracket feet. Retaining an excellent colour.

Provenance

Carved pieces of Chippendale furniture are very rare and this cabinet is of the highest quality and refinement. The cabinet-makers's superb attention to detail can be seen in the use of cedar for all the drawer linings and unusually for the reverse of the cupboard doors. Other finishing touches which denote the cabinet's quality are the cleated veneer to the top and manner in which the rounded corner of the front edge flows through the waist moulding; lower section and into the bracket feet.

Carved pieces of English furniture are found in the finest collections including that of Judge Irwin Untermeyer and the Gerstenfeld Collection.
