A highly unusual set of four Baroque Solomonic columns carved in yew wood; the crisply carved composite capital above a barley twist stem with an acanthus carved vase below and terminating in a laurel wreath; raised on a plinth base.

The earliest example of Solomonic columns were believed to have been brought to Rome by Constantine from the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. They were highly favoured during the Baroque period due to their wonderful sense of energy and movement. Examples can be found in the Baldacchino sculpted by Bernini for St. Peter's Cathedral, Rome and tapestries by Sir Peter Paul Rubens.
