The interior of each cabinet drawer retain hand written labels in beautiful late 18th Century/19th Century calligraphy. The top drawer of each cabinet is stamped Gillows, Lancaster.

Provenance

Gillows of Lancaster and London were one of the pre-eminent cabinet-making firms of Georgian and Regency England. Lancaster's close proximity to the port of Liverpool enabled Gillows to select the finest mahogany and satinwood as it was unloaded at the docks and the quality of the timber used in the construction of these cabinets is typical of their work.

Pieces by Gillows are highly sought after partly because their output is unusually well documented. The Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books documenting over 20,000 designs and their clientele are preserved at the City of Westminster Library.
